If you’ve ever rolled your eyes at a stiff, scripted wedding and thought “that’s not us”, you’re in the right place. I’m Maz, a Norfolk-based celebrant for couples who’d rather get married in a woodland, a back garden, a converted church, a pub, or surrounded by alpacas than in a beige function room with a script someone read out at the wedding before yours.
Your ceremony is the start of the celebration, not the veg before the dessert. Let’s make it the bit everyone remembers.
Ceremonies I create
A quick hello from me.
I’m a tad eccentric (only a tad), British Sign Language trained, a former mascot (dolphin, pig, elephant, a minion and once Eddie the Eagle at Essex County Cricket Club), and a natural storyteller.
After 13 years in the charity sector telling other people’s stories to raise vital funds, I’m here to tell yours.
Five things I do, all of them bespoke, none of them dull.
Weddings
For couples who want a celebration that actually sounds like them. Outdoor, indoor, themed, traditional with a twist, blended families, multicultural, gay, lesbian, transgender, self-marriage, pet weddings. If you can imagine it, we can plan it.
Renewal of Vows
For couples who’ve already done the legal bit and want to mark the journey since. Big anniversary, second chapter, “we never had the wedding we wanted the first time”. Whatever the reason, let’s mark it properly.
Elopements
For the two of you, a witness or two, and a story worth telling. Tiny, intimate, no fuss, all heart.
Namings
A proper welcome for a new baby, an adopted child, a blended family or a child of any age. No religion required. Joyful, inclusive, and made for your family. Celebrating a divorce and changing your name, or a transgender naming ceremony marking an important milestone in your life.
Funerals & Celebrations of Life
A warm, calm, deeply personal service for someone you’ve lost. Religious, non-religious, or somewhere in between, written specifically for them.
Why couples pick me.
I’m not here to read a script at you. I’m here to listen, get to know you both, and write a ceremony that makes the people who love you turn to each other halfway through and go “that’s so them”.
-
I’ve spent most of my working life in jobs where I had to genuinely connect with people, fast. Armed Forces, security at Harrods, swimming teacher, driving instructor, police community support officer, charity fundraiser. I’ve met every kind of person and I like them all.
-
I worked in a deaf school as a BSL communicator. If you’d like sign language woven into your ceremony, that’s a yes from me.
-
I’m laid back, non-judgemental, and a believer that love is love. Bring me your blended family, your dog as ring bearer, your themed costumes, your “we want to get married next to alpacas”. I’m in.
-
I’m a Toastmaster. I love being in front of a crowd. Your ceremony will not be the awkward bit at the start of the day.
Where you’ll find me.
I’m based in Norwich and cover all of East Anglia, including Norfolk, Suffolk and Cambridgeshire. Norfolk’s sandy beaches, woodland venues and converted churches are some of my favourite places on earth, and I’ve got a soft spot for The Flint Room and Norwich Arts Centre, the smaller barn venues, and anywhere that lets you do things your own way.
Happy to travel further afield in the UK too. Drop me a line and let’s chat about it.
